Rose Ariadne's Chitchcraft Blog

Dear Friends,

Let’s face it, we pagans are not the most welcome in parts of the world. it’s something that I have struggled with a lot overtime. I’ve been frustrated with my inability to make it clear to people that we are not Satanists or baby killers, that our religion is founded on a love of nature, and a love of other people, and especially a love of the God and Goddess. I know I am not alone in this frustration because the outside world definitely has its opinion set in stone when it comes to witchcraft. Thanks to some bad propaganda from the ancient Christian church, we’ve been branded for life, it seems, as something that is so far from the truth it would be funny if it weren’t so hurtful.

It’s no wonder that many people choose to hide their beliefs. While I’ve been living out of the broom closet for years, I understand that it may be a difficult thing to tell people that you are a pagan or witch. For some believers, this is just something that they are not ready to do. And no others on this path should judge them for it. Everyone comes out in their own time, and while they are “in hiding” so to speak, there are ways to keep their faith discreet without necessarily being two sided.

One of the first sticky situations that I’ve counseled people on is setting up sacred space in roommate situations. While this certainly isn’t a problem if you are sharing an apartment and have your own room, sharing a room is quite another manner. I’ve known many college students who have struggled with trying to practice their religion without freaking out their roommate and having ‘the talk. I always have thought that this was a perfect opportunity to get out in nature and get to know the deities in their original “house of worship.” After all, this is why witches used to practice mainly under the cover of darkness and out in a forest somewhere. If there’s no forest handy, find a discreet park to do your ritual. You can also try to coordinate things around your roommate’s schedule. Pick a time where you know he or she will be at work. Or sneak out into the living room when he or she is fast asleep. With a little ingenuity, you can find time for your rituals. This method works for living with family members who are not supportive of the craft as well.

The other main problem with living with others who are not pagan friendly is trying to set up an altar space. While ideally an altar should be somewhere you should set up and leave up, I understand that this is not always practical. Consider investing in a medium sized wooden box that can be used as a makeshift altar and that can store your items away from prying eyes. You’ll have to set it up each time, but the magickal energy will be stored in one specific location.

I’ve gotten in trouble in the past for my views on “hiding.” Others say we should all come “out” immediately and that giving tips for hiding your religion is making it seem less serious and like a bad thing. I disagree, obviously. Sometimes hiding your faith is practical, and necessary. And in my opinion, It’s not so much hiding as being selectively truthful. When it comes down to it, your religion is your own, and it’s really nobody’s business. If you already know that people are going to become confrontational and do not feel ready to defend yourself, it is perfectly okay to be low key about your faith and keep things to yourself. Belief is a very private thing. We’re not Evangelical Christians after all, and we’re not obligated to spread the Goddesses’ “word” on people who really don’t want to hear it. Be comfortable with your religion at the stage you are at, whether that means keeping your altar in your closet or having a big pentagram on the back of your car.

Dear Friends,

(Sorry guys, this post is for the women…)

Pregnancy is an important time in for any woman, and it is especially important for a witch. During both of my pregnancies I felt a very special connection to my unborn children and took full advantage of using magickal elements to prepare, and experience the births. There are many special rituals that can be used to get pregnant, throughout your pregnancy and to bless and protect your child. If you are trying to get pregnant there are a few things you can magickally do to speed the process (while of course exploring medical techniques as well). For this spell, you’ll need a leather pouch and small stone of each of these gems: amethyst, clear quartz crystal, chyrsoprase and aventurine. Fill your bag with these stones. When you are trying to conceive, wear the pouch around your neck and also place some fresh rosemary underneath the bed. After you become pregnant, keep the pouch with you to ease labor pains and help to bring a safe delivery for your new baby. Make sure to give the stones away before the baby is one month old. They can be given to a pregnant friend, or someone who is also trying to conceive.

You can also perform rituals during your pregnancy to have a healthy nine months. These should never be used in substitute for medical visits but should be seen as a supplement. After all, medical care is a blessing from the God and Goddess and should not be ignored. The following ritual should be preformed at noon on a Monday during the Waxing or Full Moon. Burn cinnamon incense, to bring good fortune, health and protection. Use an orange for reproductive health, silver elements for female powers and a purple candle to increase feminine energy and bring harmony. Place pictures of healthy children and mothers on your altar. You can also include any pregnancy and childbirth books that you have as well as your birth plan.

Open your ritual as you normally would, except face the West since this is the direction of women’s health. Invoke any appropriate deities (Demeter and Gaia are good choices). Look at the items on your altar and visualize all of the women and children who experience birth in a positive way around the world. This about how pregnancy and childbirth are totally natural processes and that our species has survived for thousands of years because of these processes. Speak to the spirits that you have asked to enter the circle. Tell them that you are ready to have your child, that you have learned what you needed to about pregnancy and childbirth. Emphasize that you are following your doctor or midwife’s orders. Repeat at the end of your ritual “I am healthy. My child will be health” seven times. Thank the deities and close your circle.

There are also several rituals that can be used after the birth of your child to welcome the baby into the pagan community. Most common is the Wiccaning, which is the Pagan equivalent of baptism. During a Wiccaning, the priest and priestess of your circle will present the baby to the community and ask the God and Goddess to bless and protect your child. There are also naming ceremonies that can be incorporated into a Wiccaning, or used by itself.

Using your faith to bring health and peace to your unborn baby is the first step you can take to mother your child. Just because you can’t see your unborn baby doesn’t mean that they can’t feel your emotional and spiritual presence. You provide your baby with so much more than just physical existence. Think about this as you go through your pregnancy and birth, and you will have a healthy and happy child.

Dear Friends,

Visualization is an important part of magick that has been adapted to other parts of life. Ironically it has been enveloped into the self-motivational field as a powerful tool for change. For example, sports stars use visualization to prepare for their activities. What these people don’t know if that they are using a magickal practice! Wouldn’t they be surprised!

There are many purposes for using visualization. The practice goes hand in hand with learning to concentrate, creating self-discipline, meditation, focus, astral projection and dream work —which in and of themselves are important facets of developing magickal abilities. Visualization is the creation and holding of a picture in your mind while projecting it.

When you learn to properly visualize, you will find that your ritual work will be enhanced and more effective (and who doesn’t want that!). Here’s how it works in practice. Let’s say you are doing a healing ritual and want to produce energy to release that will heal someone that you know. You produce more energy for your rite by visualizing their afflicted area as healthy than just directing energy toward this area. You can utilize the direction of the healing energy and the visualization of the area as healthy. This will promote faster and more efficient healing in your friend. This can be applied to all kind of workings. Instead of sending energy toward getting a job, visualize yourself as having the job. Visualize yourself in a happy and healthy relationship instead of trying to cast a spell to “catch” a mate.

Visualization is an essential tool, and it’s worth it to take the time to be able to visualize at will. The effort is worth it because your rituals will become more enhanced, your magickal practice will become more focused and your spells will be much more effective. Be prepared to take time developing this skill. You will expend both energy and time in allowing your natural visualization abilities to manifest themselves. You should set aside a time that you devote to the practice your visualization skills and where you can experiment with this process. Ideally, this will be done every day at a quiet time in your day when you can be alone and focus.

Remember, you have already had experience with visualization, you just might not know it. Have you ever been fantasizing or day dreaming and totally immersed yourself in the fantasy? This is exactly what visualization is.

Your daily practice can be totally personal, but here are few simple guidelines to follow. First, began to think about a subject that is dear to you. you may focus on a particular dream that you have (like a dream car or a dream house), or something you want to come into your life (wealth, a relationship etc). Close your eyes and immerse yourself in the visualization. Become aware that you are visualizing. If the image wavers, re-grasp it in your mind and hold it there as long as you are able to.

After you’ve been able to consistently visualize the scene of your choice everyday for a week, you are ready to move on to the next step. Find a quiet place in your home to sit and let yourself relax. Decide on an object that is in the room and in sight. Look at it very carefully, and keep all of your thoughts on it. Take note of every detail of the object, and then sit back and close your eyes. Try to bring the image of your chosen object into your minds eye. Hold the image there as long as you can. Experiment with this exercise everyday until you can hold the image there for at least five minutes. After a week of successful practice, move onto the next exercise.

Continue to use the same object from your home in this phase, but make sure the actual object is out of site. Hold the image in your mind’s eye, and then open your eyes and visualize the object in from of you. This is best done when you are facing a blank wall. Practice this exercise for a week.

Finally you’ll add another layer to your visualization practice. For the next week when you visualize the object against the way try to change its color and then change it back again. Then try to raise and lower the object as you see it in front of you. Rotate it, play around with the direction and then return it to the original place.

Remember, this practice does take time but it will improve your rituals and your magickal practices. Make visualization a part of your walk on this path today.

Brightest Blessing,

Rose Ariadne, Your Warm And Caring “Resident Witch In Charge”

Dear Friends,

A lot of people ask me if it is possible to be a solitary Wiccan. For whatever reason, they have limited access to local pagan groups and covens and wish to follow the path on their own. While there are no hard and fast rules for solitary witchcraft, in my opinion you can have a rich and full practice without having to be part of a coven.

Don’t get me wrong. Covens definitely have power and have their place. Wicca was created in the early 1950s by Gerald Gardener, and in its original form, coven membership was definitely required. This was because joining a coven was the only way to learn about Wicca. Today, many traditionalists feel that this is still the only way to learn about Wicca. They argue that this is how the religion is designed and that it needs to continue to be that way. They feel that a coven is a part of what defines the religion. It would be like practicing Catholicism without the church. The two are not mutually exclusive.

At least, that is one side of the argument. My opinion lies somewhere in between. While I feel that there is a lot of traditional Wicca that must be (and needs to be) practiced within the confines of a coven, solitary Wiccan practice is definitely possible. It is, in absolute definition, not technically Wicca. But it is personal witchcraft with heavily Wiccan elements.

Scott Cunningham’s Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner and Living Wicca: A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner have probably best popularized the idea of a solitary practice of Wicca. These books, along with similar titles from other authors, have encouraged individuals to explore a different form of Wicca than available with covens.

If you choose to become a solitary Wiccan, I encourage you to research as much as possible. Since you will be without the benefit of learning from a coven, you ll want to take the time to educate yourself with books and reputable websites. You may want to start with the Cunningham books as a guide. Raymond Buckland s Wicca for One is also a good choice. Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft is also an essential book for solitary practitioners and coven members alike.

There are some differences between the traditional Wiccan and the solitary Wiccan. For example, much of the interplay between the male and female sides of the spirit that is shown through the High Priest and High Priestess of a coven is lost when you are a solitary practitioner. Also, as a solitary you are responsible for building up the energy in your ritual instead of relying on the power of the rest of the group. Some would argue that your spellcasting would, therefore, have less power. But I feel that the advantage of solitaries is that they are able to tailor their spells and rituals to their specific needs, wishes and feelings. This makes the whole experience very personal which can help add power to the spellcasting.
Another question associated with being a solitary Wiccan is one of initiation. If there is no coven, Priest or Priestess, how does one become initiated into Wicca? There are many self-initiation rituals that you can take part in where you personally dedicate yourself to the God and Goddess. These rituals allow you to state your intentions toward the deities and pledge yourself to them.

Just because you are a solitary Wiccan does not mean you have to be alone on your path. There are some online covens that work very well across distances, and provide the camaraderie, support and education of a traditional coven. You can also benefit from communicating with other Wiccans in a less formal way in online message boards and chat groups.

So don’t despair if you are drawn to Wicca and live in the Bible belt. There is still room for you and your personal practice within the framework of Wicca. Just educate yourself and take the time to learn what you need. The God and Goddess call is heard by those who are meant to be on this path, no matter what form their path takes.

Brightest Blessings,

Dear Friends,

I bless my creditors. Honestly, I do! I know it may sound absurd, but let me explain myself. Every time I pay a bill I but a little energy into my checks to bless those who I am sending it too. While I’m not a big fan of corporations, I understand that there are people who are working for them who need a little good in their life.

I also know that by blessing the money that I send out I am practicing the law of prosperity. Once I understood this concept, I have never been without money when I needed it. Time and time again, I amaze my husband by having the ability to manifest the money that we need when we need it. He believes in the power of prosperity, yet is still startled to see it in action.

Technically, blessing your outgoing money is a form of money magick (and who isn’t interested in money magick?). However, I really feel that it is a higher form of money magick. I’m not simply asking for money. I’m blessing everything that goes out, knowing that I will be taken care of it need be. By understanding (and using) the law of prosperity, you can spread blessings and increase your own good fortune. You simply attach magickal energy to the money you send out.

The key to the law of prosperity is to bless, rather than curse, the money that you pay to others. Is bill paying time a happy time for you? I doubt it. Many people look forward to paying bills as much as they seek out extra dental cleanings each year!! That’s because, at the core, we resent having to pay bills. I used to believe that my money was my money and I should get to spend it how I wanted to, and not on bills. It hurt me to see so much of my funds depleted after paying the bills. I hated my creditors, and hated having to give up what was mine. Does this sound like you?

Then, I learned about the law of prosperity and experienced a shift in my thinking and my understanding. Money is not a physical tangible object. This is especially true in today’s age of ATM cards and automatic payments. Money is just a representation of energy, and it flows through your life like energy flows through a current.

If you are thinking of money as a belonging that you own, it is very hard to release it. You will want to possess it and keep it as long as you can. However, when you view money as a current that passes through your life you can give freely and without resentment. Consider it to be part of the divine circulation of life. When you see it this way, you know that you will always have more money coming your way.

Recognize that money is energy and bless it as it exits your life. To create this highest form of money magick in your life, transform paying your bills into a monthly ritual. When I practiced this I began to see my mortgage payment as a blessing on my house. I view paying taxes and blessing and supporting those around me. I’ve even been known to kiss a bill or two, to transform the energy of the bills from positive to negative.

If you give freely of your money, it will be returned to you three time three. Rather than performing money spells for cash to enter your life, think of the money that you spend as a blessing to others and trust that it will be returned to you.

Many money blessings coming your way,
Rose Ariadne
